Infection in the hip

There are many areas around the hip joint which can become infected. Patients usually present with a very rapid onset of severe pain and signs of toxicity (unless immuno-compromised). It can be difficult to identify the site of the infection as x-rays are either normal or non-specific. It may be necessary to involve gynecologists, urologists and colorectal colleagues to manage these difficult cases. MRI scanning is useful as it will identify infection in any of the bones & joints around the hip:-
